A degree in K-12 Music Education will prepare you to obtain a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License in Music (K-12).

Testing and Assessment

In addition to completing your coursework, you will need to achieve passing scores on the licensure test and the edTPA portfolio.

About the Licensure Test

You will need to achieve a passing score on the Music: Content and Instruction Praxis test.

About the edTPA portfolio

From the edTPA website:

edTPA is a performance-based, subject-specific assessment and support system used by teacher preparation programs throughout the United States to emphasize, measure and support the skills and knowledge that all teachers need from Day 1 in the classroom.

During your student teaching experience, you will gather a portfolio of materials that serve as evidence of your preparation to become a teacher. This includes an unedited video recording of you at work in a real classroom. You will work with your advisor to determine the specific requirements needed in your portfolio, which will be based on the type of license you are pursuing.
