Background

Daniel M. Huff is recognized for his skill in choral conducting, his interest in the young voice and his dedication to teacher preparation and socialization and curricular history. He has spent more than 40 years practicing, cultivating and studying his intersecting interests in music, as a product of human creativity and self-awareness, and as way that people come to know themselves and their world. His work began in central Illinois in rural and suburban schools working with students grades K-12 and various community and civic musical settings and was honed by two interludes of graduate study at the University of Wisconsin in Madison focusing on conducting and curriculum and how schooling comes to reflect particular world views, practices and ideologies.

Creative work and teaching

At Carolina, Daniel M. Huff holds dual appointments in the School of Education and the Department of Music, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Education’s Music Education Licensure Program and teaching choral conducting, voice and piano techniques courses. He also coordinates the Music Education Program in the Department of Music, conducts the UNC Men’s Glee Club – a group which tours regularly in the Mid-West, East, Southeast and Europe – and is director of the UNC Music Workshop and the All-Carolina Invitational Male Choral Festival.

He is often found making music in Hill Hall, across the eastern part of the US and overseas with the UNC Men’s Glee Club, conducting choral festivals or clinics in schools in NC and surrounding states or presenting workshops or sessions for teachers and colleagues on a variety of topics. Recent instances include performances with the UNC Men’s Glee Club at Scarsdale, NY in 2013, at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte in 2015, in various locations and around Munich, Salzburg and Eichstätt in late 2016 – early 2017, in Washington DC in 2018 and in various locations in and around Prague, Budapest and Vienna in late 2018 – early 2019. In addition, recent choral festivals include the New Hanover CO HS All-County, Durham Public Schools’ Evening of Entertainment, Henry County VA All-County HS Choral Festival and the Asheboro Schools All-City Elementary Festival.
