Elementary school teacher, counselor make magazine’s ‘best jobs’ list

Elementary school teacher and school counselor are included in US News & World Report’s list of “Best Jobs of 2012,” which was released by the magazine this week.

Elementary school teacher was ranked No. 12 and school counselor No. 17 on the ranking of jobs based on projected growth through the year 2020, current employment rates and other factors.

The magazine cited the Bureau of Labor Statistics as projecting 16.8 percent employment growth for elementary school teachers between 2010 and 2020, surpassing most other professions. The Bureau reports the median annual wage for elementary school teachers was $51,600 in 2010.

US News said there should be a 19 percent increase in the number of school counselors by 2020, citing the Bureau of Labor Statistics. School counselors’ median annual salary was $53,380 in 2010, said the magazine, citing the Department of Labor.
