Suzanne Gulledge, clinical professor of teacher education, curriculum and instruction, international and experiential education and former chair of the faculty in the School of Education, has been named the new director of the Academic Leadership Program, effective July 1.

She replaces Kim Strom-Gottfried, who directed ALP for the past eight years.

Gulledge’s primary scholarly interests are teacher education and teacher professional development, but her wide-ranging research interests include social foundations, ethics, social studies education, international studies and community-based service learning.

She earned her doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Duke University in 1983. She will continue to serve as a faculty member in the School of Education. The Carolina Center for Public Service named her a Faculty Engaged Scholar in 2009.

“I am thrilled to have Suzanne join the IAH,” said Mark Katz, director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, which sponsors the program. “She brings so much to the position, but I am particularly excited about the perspective she brings as a Faculty Engaged Scholar at Carolina. She will help our academic leaders think about the impact of their work not only on campus but in the broader community as well.”

Gulledge completed the leadership program during the 2014–15 academic year and credited both Strom-Gottfried and senior leadership consultant Rob Kramer with helping her develop her leadership style. Kramer said he looks forward to working with Gulledge with the next cohort of ALP Fellows.

“My experience with Suzanne is that she is incredibly insightful, highly experienced and keenly attuned to understanding others and building relationships,” Kramer said.

Gulledge said her life as an educator was “predestined by my love of learning and my love of school.”
