Justin Garwood, a third-year Ph.D. student in the early childhood, special education, and literacy specialization area, has been awarded a Dissertation Completion Fellowship from Carolina’s Graduate School.
Garwood, who is doing research on classroom management techniques, will receive a $16,000 stipend to use during the 2014-15 academic year. The award is designed to allow recipients to devote full-time effort to completing their dissertations.
Garwood, a native of New York state, has been using data from the Family Life Project to better understand family, community, economic and parent-child relationships and how they influence children’s development. Specifically, Garwood is looking at how classroom management differences have affected students in terms of reading achievement, engagement in school and overall academic success.
After he completes his doctorate, Garwood says he wants to work as a professor in a school of education, continuing his research and working with students who are going to be leading classrooms.
