Background
Maggie Demarse began her career as an elementary and middle school science and literacy teacher in Ohio. She became interested in interdisciplinary science and social studies instruction through her engagement in Project-Based Learning with her K-12 students. Maggie recently graduated from Michigan State University, with her Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education. During her time at Michigan State, she taught elementary methods courses in social studies, literacy and science. Her research focus is on Civic Science Education in middle school classrooms. Prior to joining the UNC School of Education, she was teaching faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, working with secondary students in the Master of Arts in Teaching program, as well as teaching elementary science methods.
Research
Maggie Demarse’s research focuses on how middle school teachers identify, understand, and implement Civic Science Education, as well as how professional learning opportunities for teachers can support their growth in understanding and implementing Civic Science Education. She specializes in qualitative research, predominately working with in-service and pre-service teachers. She began her research career working with Dr. Anne-Lise Halvorsen, and has contributed to scholarship in elementary social studies and science.
