Summers received the honor from the William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at N.C. State University.
Summers established the first leadership elementary school in the nation, based on Franklin Covey’s “7 Habits” program.
Summers is also co-author of “The Leader in Me,” which provides a program for schools based on Stephen Covey’s “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” Almost 2,000 schools around the world have implemented the program, which seeks to help students develop cooperative relationships, a sense of responsibility, kindness and good judgment.
Summers, who has been an educator for 33 years, has been principal at Combs since 1998. Combs was named the top magnet school in the nation earlier this year by Magnet Schools of America. With the recognition Combs became the first school to be named the top magnet school for a second time. Combs first received the honor in 2006.
The Friday Medal is awarded annually in honor of William C. Friday to recognize significant, distinguished and enduring contributions to education and beyond through advocating innovation, advancing education and imparting inspiration. Friday served for many years as president of the UNC system.
