Matt Hunt, principal at Northern High School in Durham, has been named one of eight finalists for the 2016 N.C. Principal of the Year.
Hunt (M.S.A. ’11) moved into the state competition for the honor when he was named Durham Public Schools’ Principal of the Year for 2015.
Hunt was named the winner of the North Central Region honor in the Wells Fargo Principal of the Year competition. Regional winners each receive $1,000 for personal use and $1,000 for their schools.
“Our eight regional recipients exemplify the high-quality leaders guiding North Carolina public schools,” said state Superintendent for Public Instruction June Atkinson. “The state’s record-breaking graduation rate is a testament to the relentless dedication they have to ensuring students have the academic skills they need to be successful.”
A state selection committee will review the portfolios of the eight regional winners and conduct an interview process before selecting the Principal of the Year. The announcement will be made May 12 during a luncheon in Cary.
Hunt comes from a family of educators, the News & Observer of Raleigh reported. He joined the staff at Northern as a teacher in 2005 before being promoted to principal eight years later, according to the paper.
