School of Education ranked No. 12 in global survey

Carolina’s School of Education has been ranked No. 12 among schools of education around the world in a survey that ranks universities around the globe by their academic impact.

The 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities was released this week by the Center for World Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Among schools of education at public universities, Carolina’s School of Education ranked No. 8.

“We are gratified by this recognition,” said Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, dean of the School of Education. “This ranking reflects the hard work of our faculty in conducting and publishing important research about what works best in education. It differs from some other rankings in that it seeks to measure faculty productivity rather than inputs, and that’s why we score so highly in this ranking. We’ll use this strong showing as inducement to continued important work.”

The Academic Ranking of World Universities – or ARWU – was started in 2003, annually publishing a ranking of the top 500 universities around the world. UNC-Chapel Hill this year was ranked No. 33.

To rank schools of education, the ARWU compares data regarding faculty research publications, assigning weights for number of papers published in a set of education-related journals, the impact of papers as measured by how often they have been cited by other researchers, the percentage of internationally collaborated papers, and other measures.
