The School of Education moved up to No. 30 in the latest graduate school rankings issued by US News & World Report. Among schools of education at public universities, Carolina was ranked No. 20.
Four of the School’s programs were ranked in the top 20 in their fields in survey results released Tuesday (March 20).
The School’s overall ranking rose one spot to a three-way tie, up from No. 31 in last year’s survey. It’s the School’s best ranking since being ranked No. 29 in the 2012 guide.
“We at Carolina’s School of Education continue to make investments in areas that add to our strengths,” said Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, dean of the School of Education. “We have committed faculty members who are productive researchers and passionate teachers, and we have students who are enthusiastic about tackling the most pressing challenges in education. This new ranking reflects gains we have made. But we have more work to do as we implement plans to continue to improve the School.”
US News & World Report rankings reflect the impact the School of Education has in teaching and research. The magazine ranks schools of education based on quality assessments from peer institutions and school superintendents, faculty research activity, student selectivity and faculty resources. Carolina’s School of Education is ranked No. 1 in North Carolina.
The rankings of schools of education are included in US News & World Report’s 2019 annual “America’s Best Graduate Schools” guide. For the rankings of schools of education, US News surveyed 385 schools that grant doctoral degrees in education, with 267 schools responding to the survey.

Carolina’s School of Education was the only school in North Carolina to have more than one program ranked in the top 20.
The specialty rankings are derived from surveys of education school deans who are asked to select up to ten top programs in each area. Schools in each specialty area are numerically ranked based on the number of nominations they received.
