Barry Hounshell, faculty member for 35 years, dies

Paul B. “Barry” Hounshell, who served as a faculty member at the School of Education for 35 years from 1966 until his retirement in 2001 has died. He was 87 years old.

Hounshell taught science education, work that was frequently recognized with awards. He received the Distinguished Service to Science Education Award from the North Carolina Science Teachers Association and was recognized by the North Carolina Science Education Leadership Association for his many years of service in science education. He served on the board of directors and numerous committees of the National Science Teachers Association. He was the recipient of several National Science Foundation Eisenhower grants.

He authored books and numerous articles about science and education and served or chaired more than 40 doctoral committees.

Hounshell earned both a bachelor of science degree and a master’s of education degree in science education and chemistry from the University of Virginia. He earned his doctorate in education from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Before joining the faculty at the School of Education, Hounshell taught biology and chemistry in public schools and was science supervisor for six years in Winston-Salem and Charlotte.

During a career that spanned more than 40 years, Hounshell taught hundreds of students, from classroom teachers to school-level administrators and district supervisors, researchers, lecturers, directors, professors, and vice university presidents and presidents.

He was married to the former Ann Graves for more than 66 years. Also surviving are four children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Alumni who studied with Hounshell have created and funded the “Barry and Ann Hounshell Fund” at the UNC School of Education to fund future science education graduate students.
