Current Program of Study

The program of studies, i.e., the courses and curriculum for the Ph.D. in Education, Applied Developmental Science and Special Education (ADSSE), is posted below:

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • The minimum number of required classroom/independent research hours is 54, broken down below.
  • Students need 6-9 dissertation hours as well.
  • Students must enroll in at least 9 credit hours each term to be considered full Maximum credit hours permitted per semester is 16.
  • All courses must be approved by the student’s Program of Studies Committee, including any substitutions or transfers.
  • Students have 8 calendar years from date of first registration to complete all requirements for the
  • Students receiving an F grade in any course or a grade of L in 9 or more hours of coursework become academically ineligible.

Ph.D Core Courses (required)

The following 21 credit hours are required for all Ph.D.in Education candidates. As foundational courses for the rest of the program, you should plan to take them in your first, or at the latest second, year of coursework.

  • EDUC 710: Introduction to Statistical Methods (3 credits)
  • EDUC 784: Intermediate Statistical Methods (3 credits)
  • EDUC 824: Fundamentals of Educational Research (3 credits)
  • EDUC 825: Development and Learning (3 credits)
  • EDUC 830: Qualitative Research Methods I: Philosophical Foundations of Qualitative Research (3 credits)
  • EDUC 867: Issues in Education Policy and Research (3 credits)
  • EDUC 876: Histories of School and Schooling (3 credits)

ADSSE Professional Development Courses (required)

  • EDUC 805A: Professional Seminar I (3 credits)
  • EDUC862: Teaching and Professional Development (3 credits) OR EDUC 865: College Teaching Internship (3 credits)

Advanced Methodology Courses (9 hours required)

Course Substitutions and Additional Coursework

With approval from the POS committee, the doctoral candidate can also take courses from other Ph.D. in Education concentrations, from other UNC-Chapel Hill academic departments, or from other universities (e.g., Duke, NC State, etc.).

Dissertation Hours

Students will take 6-9 dissertation hours while completing comps, proposal, and dissertation research.
