UNC School of Education faculty members, students, staff, and alumni will present at and attend the 2026 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association, held April 8–12 in Los Angeles.

Each year, AERA convenes the world’s largest gathering of education researchers, serving as a global forum for sharing innovative, rigorous scholarship that advances education research, policy, and practice.

UNC School of Education scholars will participate in paper and poster sessions, symposia, roundtable discussions, governance meetings, and professional development opportunities throughout the conference. Though not all participants are presenting, many faculty members, students, and alumni are represented as co‑authors on presented research.

UNC School of Education participation at AERA 2026 includes:

  • 21 faculty members
  • 2 faculty emeriti
  • 27 Ph.D. students
  • 4 staff members

Presenting:

  • 111 posters
  • 114 papers

Thurston “Thad” Domina, Ph.D., associate dean for academic affairs and the Robert Wendell Eaves Sr. Distinguished Professor in Educational Leadership, will be recognized as a 2026 Fellow of the American Educational Research Association. Nominated by peers, Domina joins a cohort of 34 exemplary scholars recognized for exceptional contributions to education research. The 2026 Fellows will be inducted during a ceremony on April 9.

Stephanie Anne Shelton, Ph.D., Donald G. Tarbet Faculty Scholar in Education and co‑coordinator of the Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Studies, will be inducted as chair of AERA’s Qualitative Research Special Interest Group for the 2026–2029 term. With more than 150 special interest groups across AERA, the Qualitative Research SIG is the largest and serves as the primary professional home for qualitative researchers nationwide.

AERA has also announced its 2026 award recipients for excellence in education research, who will be honored during the Awards Ceremony Luncheon at the Annual Meeting on April 9. Among the honorees is Terrell R. Morton (’17 Ph.D.), associate professor of Identity and Justice in STEM Education and Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago, who has been named the 2026 Scholar of Color Early Career Contribution Award recipient. The award recognizes early‑career scholars whose work advances understanding of issues that disproportionately affect minoritized populations and contributes significantly to education research and development.

Two students in the School’s Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership with a concentration in K-12 Leadership program — Stephanie Adams and Dwayne Johnson — will be recognized as 2026 Clark Scholars and will attend the David L. Clark Graduate Research Seminar.

Adams’ research centers quantitative study examining the impact of voucher expansion on the five school districts originally named in the landmark Leandro case. She serves as principal of Washington Elementary School in Guilford County.

Johnson’s research follows a mixed-methods study on chronic absenteeism in Person County Schools. A 2020 graduate of the School’s Master of School Administration, Johnson currently serves as principal of Woodlawn Elementary School in Person County.
