Documentary featuring alumna Angie Scioli gaining national notice

A documentary film featuring alumna Angie Panel Scioli (A.B.Ed. ’93, MAT ’00) is attracting renewed attention, screening at film festivals around the country.

“Teacher of the Year” follows Scioli, a teacher in Raleigh’s Leesville High School, during the 2013-14 school year. It shows her juggling the demands of her job and her family, while also working as an advocate for changes to policies affecting education.

The News & Observer of Raleigh wrote about the film in a story published online July 31.

The film has been profiled in The Atlantic, Huffington Post and on WUNC’s “The State of Things.” It has been shown at film festivals around North Carolina and around the country.

Scioli has become an activist on education issues, helping lead the Red4EdNC advocacy group. Earlier in July, she wrote a column in The News & Observer entitled “What else can I do to get the school supplies my students need?” that examined how little funding there is for books and other classroom supplies.

The National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park is streaming the film online, with a webinar panel discussion on Aug. 2. Teachers who participate in the webinar may earn continuing education credits.

The film also features commentary from School of Education faculty member Jim Trier.
