Students in the School Counseling program graduate with the preparation and confidence to make a lasting impact in their schools and communities. The program leads to K–12 school counselor licensure in North Carolina and provides the required graduate-level coursework to pursue licensure as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC).

Graduates leave UNC-Chapel Hill highly prepared — and it shows. In 2023, 100% of graduates passed the Praxis II and secured school counseling positions prior to graduation. Many go on to become award-winning professionals and district leaders, shaping student support services at both the school and system levels.

In addition to exceptional training, students benefit from robust career resources through University Career Services and The Graduate School. From one-on-one coaching and career events to a powerful Carolina alumni network, these supports help graduates transition confidently into meaningful, long-term careers.

Program Evaluation

Data collected over the past five years from alumni, employers, and student performance on the Praxis Test (required for state licensure) indicate strong support for the quality of training provided by UNC-CH’s School Counseling Program.
