Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the application process and financial aid opportunities for graduate programs at the UNC School of Education.
Each program within the School of Education has its own admission requirements. Individuals interested in applying should review the application checklist for their intended program, available in the Academic Undergraduate Programs section.
If you have specific questions, contact the program coordinator for that academic program.
All recommendations must be submitted electronically through the online application at ApplyNow.UNC.edu. Recommenders will receive an email request to submit their recommendation once the application is submitted.
If your application materials do not arrive by the application deadline, your application will be considered incomplete and will NOT be forwarded to the respective program for review.

GRE scores are valid for five years.
You may NOT send copies of transcripts or GRE scores.
All unofficial transcripts must be uploaded directly to your online application.
Official GRE scores must reported by ETS to UNC-Chapel Hill by the application deadline for the program to which you are applying. The ETS Code for UNC Chapel Hill is 5816.
Applicants whose test scores fall below the average range are still welcome to apply. In such cases, contacting the program coordinator may provide helpful insight into what the program values in a strong candidate.
In addition to meeting minimum requirements, admission decisions are based on a holistic review of academic background, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, test scores, and relevant professional experience.
After submitting the online application and paying the application fee, applicants may log into their application account to track the status of their submission.
All application materials must be uploaded through the online application at ApplyNow.UNC.edu.
If any letters of recommendation appear as “not received,” it means the recommenders have not yet submitted them. Applicants are responsible for following up directly with their recommenders to ensure all letters are submitted by the application deadline.
After the application deadline, admissions decisions are typically made and communicated within 4–5 weeks. All decisions are sent via email..
Transfer credit is considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the academic program, in consultation with the student’s advisor and, when applicable, the program of study committee.

Prospective students should contact the program coordinator of their intended program to learn which courses may be eligible for transfer. Please note that taking courses prior to admission does not guarantee acceptance into a degree program, and admission decisions are made through a formal review process.
Continuing education courses take place through the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education.
