Today marks the last day of classes at Carolina Community Academy, and what a year it’s been! Let’s celebrate the incredible journey of our students as they move up from kindergarten to first grade, and from first grade to second grade.
We’re immensely proud of the growth and achievements of Carolina’s youngest Tar Heels. We can’t wait to witness the amazing moments that lie ahead in the upcoming school year. Take a look at some of the highlights from CCA’s 2023-24 school year.

Belief in the power of community
January 4, 2023
Growing up in a small town in western Massachusetts, Cora Hirschfeld was raised with the values of community and service. Her father, an Episcopal minister, taught the importance of service and faith in a more just world. Her mother, a public school teacher and vibrant extrovert, taught her the importance of bringing people together to do good. Through their example, Hirschfeld was inspired to pursue a path that enabled her to serve others and contribute to the betterment of communities. In 2023, she served as a social worker at Carolina Community Academy. Read more.
Championing inclusion, implementing support for all students

Grace Landrum (’23 B.A.Ed.), a student in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program with a concentration in elementary and special education, is one of 14 students — in the MAT and School Counseling programs — in the inaugural cohort of the Fellows for Inclusive Excellence program. She is doing her student teaching at Carolina Community Academy in Roxboro. Read more.

“‘No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.’ I’ve heard that a million times, and it’s been attributed to a ton of people. But it’s true. If we don’t build every relationship — with students, families, teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers — where people know that you genuinely care about them, everything else is moot,” said Daniel Watson, principal of Carolina Community Academy. On a crisp October morning, 29 kindergarteners from the Carolina Community Academy in Roxboro, N.C., walked through the doors of the Ackland Art Museum and were transported to early Japan. A world of kimonos, hair ornaments, and wonder awaited them. Read more.
Carolina Community Academy opens in Person County

University and community leaders officially opened the Carolina Community Academy on Aug. 25 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at North Elementary School in Roxboro, North Carolina. Read more.
Carolina collaborates with Person County to launch K-2 community academy

Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will partner with Person County School District to launch the Carolina Community Academy, an innovative school for K-2 students at North Elementary in Roxboro, North Carolina. Read more.
